Strobist Lighting 102 – Position (Angle)

The first educational piece of the Lighting 102 tutorial is up on Strobist. Titled Unit 1.1 – Position (Angle) it talks about off axis light and learning how to see light direction. By reading the material and doing the exercises you’ll learn how light direction can affect your photos.

You’ll see how on-axis light is unflattering, flat, and rather bland. Using the flash off camera (off-axis lighting) can give dimension and reveal detail in your subject. I’d suggest that you try the exercises with a human subject and also with some inanimate object like a pine cone or piece of fruit.

Go read the Lighting 102 article and have fun experimenting and learning.

*** Thoughts Aside ***

Digital cameras make it easy to learn lighting or any other aspect of photography. Your digital camera uses a memory card to store photos. Shoot, download, erase, shoot more. Whether you use a Panasonic digital camera or an Olympus camera or any other brand they all work the same. Downloading is easy after the digital camera driver installation puts all the necessary software on your computer.
