Getting Your Flash Off the Camera

If you’re lucky enough to have a camera and flash combination that supports wireless communication you are all set. Turn on the wireless mode, pull the flash off the camera and start shooting. Otherwise you’ll need an off camera cord.
The off camera cords will cost you between $50 and $100 and most are 6 foot extensions. I suggest you buy the manufacturers product and not a third party item. You’ll get better compatibility that way.
The cords have a ‘foot’ end that slides on the hotshoe of the camera and a ’shoe’ end that you slide the flash onto. You’ll see 3-5 little metal contacts on either connection. These are what transmit the signals between the camera and flash. You’ll still have the full functions of the flash, as if it were on top of the camera, but you’ll be able to place it off-axis for more dramatic lighting.
Although you may be slightly limited by an off camera cord you will get nicer pictures. Using a flash bracket to position the flash above the lens will remove redeye and put the shadow of the light down below your subject. Lots of wedding pros shoot this way.
If you shoot macro stuff the cord gives you the flexibility for lighting your subject from any angle. All in all, off camera cords are quite useful.
