Daylight White Balance Works 90 Percent of the Time

Think about it. Most of your pictures are shot outdoors or indoors with a flash. That’s all covered by Daylight White Balance. The flash puts out light that is the same color as (or very close to) daylight. This is what I have my camera set to as a default.

If your camera has a Flash WB setting then use it with flash photos. It will slightly warm the pictures you take with a flash. You may notice that flash photos taken on Daylight WB are a pinch blue. My Nikon does this. Also, you can use the Flash WB for outdoor photos to give them a little bit of warmth.

** When we photographers talk about ‘cool’ and ‘warm’ light we’re referring to more blue or yellow/red light.

A lot of cameras also have 2 additional WB settings you can use outside; Cloudy and Shade. Both of these warm the photo, one stronger than the other. Try these next time you shoot in both of these situations and see if you like your pictures more. Cloudy is also useful to really warm the colors when shooting Sunsets.

Just a reminder: When you play with your WB settings be SURE to reset back to normal (Daylight WB) before you shoot something else.
