Fluorescent White Balance For Other Indoor Shots

Yet another white balance setting you’ll use infrequently is the Fluorescent White Balance. Just like the Tungsten setting, maybe 10 percent of your photos will require it. Again, when you need it you’ll be glad you have it.

Fluorescent tubes emit light that is more green than standard daylight. There are variations too, like Cool White, Warm, etc. Your camera may have 2 or 3 different Fluorescent WB settings to accommodate these variations. Check your camera manual to see exactly what the Standard, FL1 and FL2 settings do.

Though it’s not easy to tell whether the fluorescent lights you’re shooting under are Cool or Warm, a few test shots will quickly let you know. Setting the proper Fluorescent WB setting will get you good color.

If you happen to be an eBay’er and you’re using one of the light tent kits that are so readily available, it’s likely to use the new spiral fluorescent bulbs. Again, a few quick test shots will let you know which WB setting is correct for the type of bulbs you have.
