To DNG or Not to DNG

The boys over at Lightroom Killer Tips have produced another informative video. This one is about the DNG format. Lots of debate from pros and amateurs alike surround DNG. You can view the video here – Video – DNG and Lightroom.

RAW file formats differ from brand to brand and even from camera to camera. Every new file format has a bunch of software developers working feverishly to update their products to support the new stuff. Wouldn’t it be nice to have one file format?

That’s Adobe’s proposition, and it’s been embraced by a few cameras already. Nikon and Canon are still using their own formats and who knows if they’ll ever change. Being able to develop their own RAW format means they can incorporate any new features or tweaks, instead of having to conform to someone else’s file structure.

One of the nice features of DNG, although it does bloat the file a bit, is the ability to save the original RAW file in the DNG. As Matt mentions in the video, this is essential for some agencies where the law specifies a file be untouched.

You can get a bunch more info on DNG from Adobe’s website and decide for yourself. Adobe has promised to support DNG forever so it may be the best way to maintain future compatibility. Just in case, you should probably keep your current copy of Bibble or Nikon Capture or Lightroom or whatever you’re using. Ya never know!
