Finding Lenses for Your Nikon D40/D40x

When Nikon introduced the D40 there was a lot of talk about it only using AF-S lenses. Since the camera does not have an AF motor to drive the lens, it relies on lenses that have that motor built in. Unfortunately, most AF-S lenses are rather pricey.

After the D40x popped on the scene Nikon and other manufacturers had to beef up their line of lenses with motors. Nikon has introduced a few more less expensive AF-S lenses, like the 18-135, the 18-200 VR, and the new 55-200. Sigma and Tamron have a number of lens options too.

Sigma has a list on their website of compatible lenses for the D40/D40x. Any lens with HSM, Sigmas High Speed Motor, will work. Unfortunately, this page also lists some non-HSM lenses, which won’t work.

You can get a 10-20, an 18-50/f2.8, an 18-200, or jump on the newly announced 50-150/f2.8 lens. That’s a handy range for indoor events.

Speaking of new lenses, Tamron has revised their 18-250 Di-II to now include a motor. Read the press release here. The lens is set to start shipping in Japan mid month. Worldwide pricing and availability is not yet determined. I’d anticipate this lens to cost $50-100 more than the standard 18-250.

If Nikon doesn’t produce a lens with your desired focal length range, you do have other sources to get what you want.
